BESPOKE FAQ

How do I start the Bespoke Process?

Bespoke projects start with an initial consultation either in person, by phone, or email to discuss your ideas & budget. In person or zoom appointments are our preference, as we can share imagery & ideas more efficiently.

During our consultation we will discuss possible designs, material options, timeframe and budget. If you are unsure of any details at this early stage, that's ok and to be expected - we will guide you through the process.

To get started - book an appointment or email the studio.

How much do bespoke pieces cost?

There is a minimum cost of $2000 AUD for one-off unique pieces in gold.

Price varies depending on the design, complexity & materials. You can set the budget, and the piece can be designed and materials selected to suit.

If you simply want to make a minor modification to an existing design (eg, different stone colour or metal) this will be more cost effective & a faster turnaround.

How long do bespoke projects take?

Anywhere from 4 - 12 weeks depending on the nature of the project & current workloads. Timeframe can be discussed in more detail during our first consultation.

If you need your piece completed by a certain date, please let us know and we will try our best to accommodate your request.

Rush orders on a shorter timeframe may be possible by request.

Can I supply my own gold or gemstones?

We are happy to repurpose most gemstones or diamonds out of existing jewellery. Gemstones will need to be inspected at the studio to make sure they are in a suitable condition.

We are not able to reuse or melt down customers metals to use in our pieces due to our casting process. Precious metals may be traded in for store credit - this would require the metal being assessed and weighed in the studio.

How do I find the correct ring size if I am purchasing a ring as a gift?

If you are able to measure the inside diameter of a ring they currently wear to the nearest mm, or take it to a jeweller to measure the size, this will help to get a good estimate of the ring size. Take note of what hand and finger they wear that ring on & we can usually take an educated guess.

We do not recommend any string or paper methods to measure the finger circumference.

Most rings can be resized after purchase, but it’s good to get as close to the size as possible to avoid any resizing issues & extra costs.

If the ring is not a surprise - order a ring sizer.

Can I work on a bespoke project from overseas?

Yes absolutely - the majority of our bespoke projects are worked on remotely.

Initial consultations can be scheduled via zoom, phone or email. We will then keep you updated with photos and videos via email or Whatsapp throughout the entire process.

In some circumstances we can courier wax models to your door to try on & view in person before proceeding onto the casting stage.

MATERIALS & SOURCING

What metals do you work in?

Alexandra Dodds works with -

9 Carat Gold (375) Yellow, Rose or White Gold
14 Carat Gold (585) Yellow, Rose or White Gold
18 Carat Gold (750) Yellow, Rose or White Gold
Platinum (950)
Sterling Silver (925)

WHAT METALS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR ENGAGEMENT OR WEDDING RINGS?

The premium choice for wedding and engagement jewellery is 18ct Gold. The high percentage (75%) of pure gold combined with additional alloys gives this metal the ideal combination of strength and durability, while resisting tarnish & discolouration.

14ct gold is good balance between durability and richness, making it a suitable option for everyday wear, wedding & engagement ring pieces.

9ct gold is our most economical gold option. While suitable for everyday wear, 9ct contains a lower percentage (37.5%) of pure gold and a high alloy content, making it more prone to tarnish and discolouration.

Where do you source your metals from?

We work closely with a family owned Sydney based foundry, who is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) to source & cast our precious metals.

The foundry pride themselves on the highest level of quality and the low impact they make on the environment compared with any other precious metal refining, casting and fabrication companies in Australia.

The gold we use is primarily from recycled sources - through the foundry's in-house refinery which processes jewellers scrap, lemel & sweeps. Any fresh metal or findings are sourced from reputable & accredited suppliers in Australia or Europe.

Enquire about our recycling initiative where we encourage customers to trade their old gold jewellery in for credit towards a new piece of jewellery.

Where do you source your diamonds & coloured gemstones from?

SAPPHIRES & COLOURED GEMSTONES

Over the past 10 years, Alexandra has built trusted relationships with reputable Australian-based small businesses, including family-run mines, local suppliers, and gemstone cutters to source our Australian sapphires and coloured gemstones.

Whenever possible, we prioritise gemstones of traceable origin that are both sourced and cut within Australia. For all other coloured gemstones, our suppliers guarantee they are from conflict-free, ethically & socially responsible sources.

Alexandra Dodds also offers a remodelling service, allowing you to repurpose gemstones from heirloom jewellery. If needed, we can facilitate the recutting and repolishing of your stones prior to production, bringing out their sparkle before setting them into a new piece.

DIAMONDS

Alexandra Dodds prioritises using diamonds from traceable, ethical sources. Whenever possible, we source natural diamonds from Australia and Canada, which come with certificates of origin to verify their responsible sourcing.

In cases where fully traceable options aren't available, we work exclusively with reputable suppliers who comply with the Kimberley Process and guarantee their diamonds are conflict-free and ethically sourced.

We also work with lab-grown diamonds, an alternative option with the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds.
